Conflict with Amazon S3 plugins introduced with v2.0

Last year I set up a blog using the plugin ‘Amazon S3 for WordPress with CloudFront Version 0.4.1.1′ by James David Low [1] and was uploading photos successfully using WordPress for Android Version 1.5

My photos uploaded to the amazon bucket via the site as expected and the correct code was written at the end of each post.

When I upgraded to WP for Android 2.0 I discovered that while photos continued to upload to amazon via the site as expected; no code was written in post, and the image was not attached to post when I looked in the media library.

I then tried WP for Android 2.0 on a similar site with no AWS bucket, and photos upload correctly, so my Galaxy S2 phone, server configuration and WordPress (always latest version) settings are working together.

On a third site, which uses the original plugin Amazon S3 for WordPress v0.4 by Joe Tan [2], photos upload to amazon via the site as expected, but the code in the post incorrectly references wp-content/uploads instead of the amazon bucket.

On this site, media uploaded via a computer go to Amazon and are referenced correctly.

Any insights or fixes would be appreciated; I hope this is the correct place to raise this.

2.0 didn’t change the method to upload images at all, so I’m not sure it is the culprit (but it could be). Have you contacted the plugin author?

    • johnpotter 7:52 pm on January 27, 2012 Permalink | Reply

      Hi Dan

The images are still uploading fine – but the code doesn’t get written by the editor; which has changed I think.

The original plugin author Joe Tan last updated his site in September 2010, which suggests he is unlikely to be of help. Besides – his plugin works as advertised.

James Low wrote an extension to allow use of cloudfront. He hasn’t replied to other requests for assistance in the comments on his page.

I don’t understand why these two versions should behave differently.

I’ll set up a site with both versions of the plugin so I can do more testing. I can give you access it it’s useful.

But it will have to be tomorrrow – I’m off to the beach with friends for a swim, then I’m on BBQ duty.

The 2.0.5 release is ready for some testing from owners of the Nook Color or Nook Tablet. If you have one of these devices, it would help us out a lot if you could give this build a test before we submit to the nook app store.

    Please post any feedback here!

(Note: to side load the app, you’ll need to have a nook developer license or a rooted device)

Media Error: device out of Memory

Try killing some apps or rebooting and then have another go. The error means it didn’t have enough memory to create the thumbnails.

I saw a user bug report about the app not working while the device was in Maintenance mode. I’m not sure how common it is to have maintenance mode turned on, but the error message was confusing. Can we avoid this somehow and have the app let them know they need to turn maintenance off in order to use the app?

    • Dan 7:03 am on January 24, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Probably, Maintenance mode is a plugin right? I’ll give it a test on my self-hosted and see what we can do.

Oh, I assumed it was a state of the device/OS, like Windows’ “Safe Mode”. But I’m not fluent in android ;)

    Here’s what’s on the list for 2.0.5:

    • Layout and optimizations for the Nook Tablet, Nook Color and BlackBerry playbook.
    • Testing on the above devices, make sure app runs solid on them.
    • Squash a bug related to force close in EditPost.java
    • Disable geotagging for devices that don’t support location services
    • More small fixes, listed in the 2.0.5 milestone

I have a bug in 2.0.4 related to photo upload. When I upload a photo, the app disregards the settings in the photo upload section and uploads a 500 px wide photo instead, unless I select the “upload and link to full size photo” (which is too large for my purposes). How do I submit a proper bug report?

      • Rip Rowan 9:34 am on January 27, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Actually it appears that the problem only occurs if I share a photo from the gallery to the app. If I take the photo from within the app (ie. using Quick Photo) then it seems to observe the size setting.

The bugs keep coming, so we keep squashing! Here’s a beta of 2.0.4 that includes the following:

    • Fix for links going out to the end of a paragraph upon upload.
    • Fix for the more tag issue when saving local drafts repeatedly.
    • Underlining text now uses a different class, so users shouldn’t get underlined text where they didn’t it
    • Updated Danish and Bosnian translations

Give it a go, especially mess around with the more tag. Post here if you see any issues!

I got a new smart phone a few weeks ago, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, with Android 4. And I don’t think I have received any notifications about new comments on the new phone, but I got them on the old original Droid. Is the app compatible with Android 4?

      • Bill 10:11 pm on January 10, 2012 Permalink | Reply

And, yes, I have had the app on the new phone since I got it. And, fyi, I just installed v. 2.0.4

Did you turn comment notifications on? You turn them on by tapping the menu button -< Preferences on the main dashboard, then check the box next to the blog you want notifications for and save. Works fine on my Galaxy Nexus.

Thanks Dan. I didn’t notice that menu button at the bottom. I was looking at the top menu button and under that looking at Settings and couldn’t find anything about notifications. Thanks! A suggestion… combine Settings and Preferences in one place.

Could you please update the danish translation again. I changed a few, but important, strings.

    • Muz 9:47 pm on January 18, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Hi Dan, again thanks for the updates, I really like that the bold and italics are more accessible now. However, I have found that I can no longer access my comments as it results in a force close (I could access it before the 2.0.4 update). I can do a general refresh and the number of new comments does appear over the comments icon, but I cannot access it. I have tried uninstalling, rebooting the phone and then doing a fresh reinstall of the app, but the problem remains. My phone stats remain Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, android 2.2.

Hmm, that’s not good. I don’t see any crash reports that have to do with comments. Can you share your blog’s URL?

I’m going to submit 2.0.3 to the Android Market on Monday. It has a few changes:

    • Uses wp.getUsersBlogs to get the self-hosted site URL instead of wp.getOptions for stats
    • HTML editor functionality added back for editing existing posts or pages. This is because the rich text editor was eating some post HTML in some cases.
    • Scheduled posts now show as ‘Scheduled’ in the post list status.
    • Fixes for issues with GMT date conversion.

If you want to give it a test this weekend, here’s a signed build: http://db.tt/QK4sjcHb

      Hi Dan,

I would like to give a few hints on what I have troubles with using the WP-application.

The first photo that becomes uploaded always gets wider than the 300 pxl. I have chosen in my settings.

When I link a word and save, the whole passage in the textflow becomes linked. Very disturbing.

When I want to timeset something I have to set it an hour before I acctually want it to be published even.though I have the correct CET on my phone.

For what it’s worth, I have an htc Desire.

It is a great application besides the things above. :)

How come the danish translation isn’t updated?

I recently finished it and found out, that the strings were validated instantly. Unfortunately that resulted in a lot of typos and that noncorrrect and nonconventional translations slipped through.

Therefore I went through every string to check it and the translation is fine now. I know from @vanillalounge, that the translations isn’t deployed as such for WordPress for Android, but they that appear with the next release.

But I just updated WordPress for Android and it still has the old, faulty translation.

Could you please look into that?

      • Dan 12:00 pm on January 10, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Sure, I’ll download the new strings from GlotPress.

                  Hi Dan,

I have found an Issue, when I use the Keyboard Swiftkey X and in Landscape Modus I can’t the the Editor. The Textarea is to small. But when I use the original Android Keyboard it shows correct. But I can write better with the SwiftKey X Keyboard :-)

If you want can I send you an screenshot..

I downloaded this version as well as the 2.0.4 version, and I can’t seem to find the option to use the HTML editor instead of the rich text editor, so my HTML tags are still getting mangled. Where do I find that option in the editor? Thanks!

      • Dan 2:40 pm on January 14, 2012 Permalink | Reply

The HTML editor is used when editing an existing post. What HTML is getting mangled for you?

        • cory 2:48 pm on January 14, 2012 Permalink | Reply

New as well as existing posts are getting mangled for me.

For example, I created a new post from the app with just one line, bolded, and when I try to edit it the “bold line” line gets changed to “strongbold line/strong”.

After lots of troubleshooting, I think I’ve got the date issues sorted out. The XML serializer wasn’t parsing the dates as GMT, so the date would be off by whatever the user’s offset from GMT was. Looking a lot better in http://android.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/559

I’d love to see the app not notify me of my own comments. Presumably this would be possible by checking the author id against the id of the user logged in on the app?

    • Dan 7:08 am on January 5, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think the comment object returned has the user id, just the email address. I’ll double check though as it’s pretty annoying to get notified of your own comments.

    • Alex Leonard 7:39 am on January 5, 2012 Permalink | Reply

That’d be great. I’ve always found it odd that I got notified of my own comments and hopefully the email addresses can be matched to ignore comments from self. Don’t know if it would be different for wp.com accounts.
